Ricky Skaggs to headline Red White & Bluegrass festival

There’s going to be some serious pickin’ going down on Hollywood Beach. Grammy-winning bluegrass icons Ricky Skaggs and Laurie Lewis will headline the 6th Annual Red, White & Bluegrass Festival on Hollywood Beach, featuring an expanded line-up of bluegrass, folk, blues, and country artists performing at multiple stages along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk on May 16-18, 2008.

Ricky Skaggs will perform on Saturday, May 17 at 9 p.m. on the Main Stage, located directly on the beach near Polk Street, one block north of the Oceanwalk Mall. West Coast bluegrass veterans Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands will perform at the Hollywood Beach Theater on Sunday, May 18 at 8 p.m.

Mr. Skaggs began his extraordinary career at a very young age. At age seven he appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs; at 15 he was a member of legendary Ralph Stanley's bluegrass band. He went on to greater fame as a member of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band in the late ‘70s, then embarked on a solo career that has earned him 13 Grammy Awards, including the 2008 Grammy Award for Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album for his release Salt of the Earth, and more than a dozen number one singles. Skaggs is largely responsible for a back-to-basics movement in country music, bringing his deep understanding of traditional American roots traditions to a worldwide audience. He is currently touring with the group Kentucky Thunder in support of his brand new release, Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947, a selection of songs by bluegrass legend Bill Monroe. He recently received an honorary doctorate from Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

Singer/songwriter and fiddler extraordinaire Laurie Lewis emerged from the Bay Area bluegrass scene in the early ‘70s with her own distinct fusion of traditional and contemporary influences. She has achieved worldwide recognition as a major proponent of newgrass, a progressive approach that uses traditional bluegrass instruments but also includes elements of folk, country and pop. She won a Grammy for True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 1997 and was twice named Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

The 6th Annual Red, White & Bluegrass Festival will feature delicious food and family-friendly entertainment in a spectacular beachside setting. Musical performances are free and open to the public.

The HOTexpress Trolley will provide transportation along its regular route throughout the event. The HOTexpress will run on Friday, May 16 from 5-11 p.m.; on Saturday, May 17 from 12 noon to 1 a.m.; and on Sunday, May 18 from 12 noon to 11 p.m.
